Barrio de la Estación Tasting named 2016’s Best Wine Tourism Experience at Spain’s IWC Awards

The first edition of these awards recognizes the international success of the most important Riojan wine festival, held in Haro in September

Haro, 20th October.- The International Wine Challenge Awards Merchant Spain, held in Madrid on 17th September, has named the second edition of the Barrio de la Estación Tasting - that took place on September 16th and 17th in Haro- 2016’s 'Best Wine Tourism Experience'.

The IWC jury, which included certified wine professionals of international prestige, such as Sarah Jane Evans MW, Charles Metcalfe, Rafael del Rey and Joxe Mari Aizega, has honored the enormous success of this event which attracted over 5,000 wine lovers and professionals for the second year in a row. Thanks to this festival, Haro’s Barrio de la Estación, which boasts the largest concentration of century-old wineries in the world – is now widely recognized as one of the world’s most important wine tourism destinations, which origin is linked to the wine trade with France (see a summary of the history of the Barrio de la Estación). The Spanish Master of Wine Pedro Ballesteros was the chairman of the jury of the International Wine Challenge Awards Merchant Spain, though, at his own request, he did not take part in the deliberation of the award in the category for 'Best Wine Tourism experience', as he cooperated in the organization and led the masterclass of the Barrio de la Estación tasting.

The Barrio de la Estación Tasting, organized by seven iconic wineries -López de Heredia Viña Tondonia; La Rioja Alta, S.A.; Bodegas Muga; Bodegas RODA; CVNE; Bodegas Bilbaínas y Bodegas Gómez Cruzado that coexist in this wine hot spot- has now received two significant recognitions for its work in sharing Rioja’s wine history, culture, and tourism. The first edition of this wine festival - celebrated in September 2015 – was also named an 'Innovative Wine Tourism Experience' by the international network Great Wine Capitals.
