Haro, 22nd November 2017 - The wine guide 'GUÍA VIVIR EL VINO' has awarded David González and Juan Antonio Leza, the winemaker-oenologists at the helm of GÓMEZ CRUZADO winery in Haro’s Barrio de la Estación, the BEST WINE REVELATION OF THE YEAR for CERRO LAS CUEVAS, which was selected from among the “11 MAGNIFICIENT WINES for 2017”. This wine guide, published annually, compiles the best wines that will be on the market in 2017. Sommelier Raúl Serrano put together this selection after conducting a blind tasting of 1,500 wines.

The awards ceremony held in Madrid was attended by winemakers, politicians, readers of VIVIR EL VINO, sommeliers and specialized press. The event was hosted by María Díez Nepomuceno, managing editor of the VIVIR EL VINO GROUP; Raúl Serrano, the wine guide's editor; and Jorge Díez, the group’s marketing manager.

The wine guide also notes that “GÓMEZ CRUZADO has experienced a second honeymoon period starting in 2008 upon the arrival of David González and Juan Antonio Leza (…). In addition to modernizing the existing wine collection, these two terroir-focused winemakers sought to capture very specific locations in the bottle.”

CERRO LAS CUEVAS SELECCIÓN TERROIR starts on bush-trained vines - 95% Tempranillo with a touch of Graciano (5%) - that have been growing for some 80 years on small plots around the village of Leza in Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. This village has the highest annual precipitation in the area, with significant fog in autumn and spring, which clearly contributes to this wine’s freshness and balance. Poor soil with a high limestone content helps create structured wines with an exceptional tannin concentration. A village wine is born then in a mythical Rioja's terroir.

“Meticulous grape selection and the utmost care in the production process enable this wine to surprise the senses: intense with ripe fruit and notes of balsamic. With its TERROIR SELECTION, GÓMEZ CRUZADO aims to transport us to the landscapes of Rioja's most privileged areas", explains VIVIR EL VINO. CERRO LAS CUEVAS 2013 TERROIR SELECTION is already available on the market with a limited production of 2,305 bottles.
