Gómez Cruzado White launches its 2014 vintage

A vintage of Atlantic character, an exceptional year for white wines

Haro, 17 June 2015 - GÓMEZ CRUZADO WHITE lauches its 2014 vintage on the market, which oenologist David González describes: “Once again this year exudes the Atlantic character of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa; and as in 2013, it was an exceptional year for white wine”.

GÓMEZ CRUZADO WHITE 2014 blends varieties native to Rioja Viura (85%) and white Tempranillo (15%). All the grapes hail from high altitude areas around the town of Haro with stony alluvial soil consisting of pebbly topsoil and a deep limestone layer.

In its second year on the market, GÓMEZ CRUZADO WHITE 2014 opts for the Burgundian style: highlighting the qualities of the particular vineyards more than the varieties' expression. After alcohol fermentation takes places in a stainless steel tank, half of the volume is transferred to French oak barrels (un-toasted and steam bent) where its ages with fine lees for five months, while the other half is aged with fine lees in a concrete vat. The goal of this shorter ageing in wood and cement is to achieve a complex white wine without an excess of woody aromas.

Our oenologist describes the 2014 Atlantic vintage: "Harvest was complicated, rainy and quite cool, which intensified working conditions in the vineyard and at the selection table. However, this vintage did meet the criteria necessary to create great white wine".

Freshness and complexity

GÓMEZ CRUZADO WHITE 2014 maintains the high quality that characterized the first vintage of this wine and continued to employ the traditional methods and the traditional variety - Viura - which combines freshness and complexity.

The result is a white wine with delicate citrus and tropical aromas, accompanied by sweet vanilla and hints of freshly-baked bread - fruit of its ageing with lees. At first, this wine is voluptuous in the mouth, but then acidity makes up for this initial volume, and gives way to a refreshing ending, emphasizing its versatility in pairing.
