With the beginning of the harvest that we started last 30th September, David González, manager and oenologist of Gómez Cruzado, makes a reflexion about this new vintage, marked by a very difficult vegetative cycle due to external circumstances and the weather conditions of the last months. In his opinion, the wine-growing keys of this year have been mantaining a good vegetation free of attacks from mildew and powdery mildew, along with creating a microclimate around the bunches since the last part of the summer there were high temperatures and a risk of dehydration, specially on the shoulders of the bunches of tempranillo.

In this harvest, which was meant to be quite premature, the rains of the last weeks, in addition to the low temperatures during the nights, have favoured an optimal ripening of tannins and anthocyanins. These, combined with a good health of the vineyard, have made us call off a week on the initial forecasts. In fact, David thinks that the correct reading of the harvest and the ability of adaptation to a climate that changed over the last weeks will be the challenge and the key of this campaign, as the last phase of the ripening will be very slowly completed, specially if the next days we keep having sun and cold North wind.

2020 is meant to be a year with great potential for red wines, in which old vineyards have resisted well the hydric stress of the summer and the cold areas show very good colour parameters and a quite low acidity due to the high temperatures in August. In our case, in the two areas we mainly work with, in the high Najerilla the granche shows a perfect state, with loose bunches because of a regular set, what is ideal to avoid the risk of botrytis in a dangerous area for that. In the area of the Cantabrian mountain range, slighty affected by the stress, some low parts of the vineyards show overproduction, while on the north of the road, on the skirts of the range ,the bunches are loose and the grapes show a perfect ripening.

Our job in the winery, as every year, will be trying to make the most out of each vineyard and transfer to our wines the profile of a vintage that will be unforgettable in every sense, but that nevertheless will give us grapes of an optimal quality which allows us to face the next weeks with the certainty that turning 2020 into a great vintage is in our hands.
