Honorable launches its 2011 vintage

Mythical brand of the winery, only released the years of fruit of exceptional quality

Haro, 9 October 2015.- HONORABLE launches its 2011 vintage on the market, with a production of 9,500 bottles. The mythical wine of the century-old winery GÓMEZ CRUZADO, HONORABLE is crafted from our oldest vineyards (over 70 years old), wherein the most prominent variety is Tempranillo, but Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo and Viura are also present –traditional varietal blend in Rioja-. The grapes come from old ‘majuelos’ found on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, the majority located on the sunny Southern or South-eastern sides. All the vineyards are rooted in very poor, whitish, calcareous clay soils with deeply buried slabs of calcareous rock.

HONORABLE is only produced in years in which the fruit is of exceptional quality. "With HONORABLE we seek complexity. Our special wine wants to be the reflection, the ultimate expression of the best vineyards in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria, in a mythical area, bound for growing Tempranillo”, summarizes David Gonzalez, winemaker.

Delayed year and ripening period unusually warm

Vintage 2011 was characterized by a cold winter, dry and long, lasting well into the spring. These harsh winter conditions delayed budding, which continued into summer since temperatures did not increase very much. However, in September, when the grapes had already changed colors and at the time when Tempranillo is most sensitive to high temperatures, unusually warm temperatures were recorded. “This unseasonable weather, on the one hand, made up for delay in this vintage, and on the other hand, the most ideal grapes for our wines were once again found in the highest and coolest regions of this designation of origin area”, underlines the winemaker.

HONORABLE is manual harvested in small boxes of 15 kilos. The winemaking process comprises the alcoholic fermentation at stainless steel vats with controlled temperature and  malolactic fermentation in new French oak, where it remains 18 months.

HONORABLE 2011 is a red wine with structure, concentrated and complex, with nuances associated with the terroir of origin. Powerful and tasty, it maintains balance and good acidity that characterizes the entire range of GÓMEZ CRUZADO wines. Spicy and fruity, with plenty of black fruit, HONORABLE 2011 shows the expression of the best vineyards in Rioja Alta and Alavesa.
