20 of October of 2013

Haro, October 2013 - The annual competition Wines from Spain Awards (2013) has chosen Gómez Cruzado Reserva 2007, by Bodegas y Viñedos de Gómez Cruzado, as the year's Best Rioja. Foods & Wines from Spain (ICEX) hosts this annual competition that aims to introduce British consumers to the diversity and quality of Spanish wines.

The jury consists of an elite group of experts in the field and is led by journalist and Master of Wine Tim Atkin. Other remarkable members of the team are Graham Nash of Tesco and Simon Field of Berry BROS.

Consumers have the opportunity to learn more about the winning wines through a guide to be published in the near future, as well as at promotional events throughout the year. A wine tasting for the press and sector will also be held during the month of October.

A new image

Gómez Cruzado received this award soon after updating their image, and at a time when other changes were under way as well. That is, about a year prior the winery had incorporated a new management team. Bodegas y Viñedos de Gómez Cruzado is in the midst of returning to its roots and recovering its history.

Fines wines with typicity

Bodegas y Viñedos de Gómez Cruzado is located in Haro, in the Barrio de la Estación, and is one of the area's smallest wineries. It was founded in 1886 by D. Ángel Gómez de Arteche, Duke of Montezuma. After passing through different hands, since 2003 the winery has belonged to the Baños family, who are originally from Rioja and currently reside in Mexico. Thus, the winery is getting back to their origins.

Gómez Cruzado has long been known for its fine Rioja wines - faithful to the style and typicity of the area's wines. Nowadays, the winery combines its artisanal history with the technology and science necessary to capture the terroir of its grapes, creating wines of remarkable elegance, finesse and personality.
