A tribute to the Rioja's great historic white wines that stands the test of time

26 of May of 2016

Haro, La Rioja. 26 May 2016. - The GÓMEZ CRUZADO winery located in Haro's Barrio de la Estación continues on its tour of Rioja’s DOCa. The newest representative of its village wines collection is the white MONTES OBARENES 2013. This wine forms part of GÓMEZ CRUZADO TERROIR COLLECTION which is a product of this century-old winery's desire to faithfully express the truly unique characteristics of specific terroirs from across a designation of origin region as vast and diverse as Rioja, amidst a period of renovation pioneered by Juan Antonion Leza and David González.

MONTES OBARENES represents our take on the great Rioja white wine that ages well, like those traditionally produced in Haro, and using the Viura as the main variety”, explained oenologist David González.

This wine is a Viura coupage that includes a small percentage of white Tempranillo. It begins in vineyards grown in ferrous-clay soil with a thin layer of gravel on the surface, located in the outskirts of Haro, at the foot of the Montes Obarenes.

MONTES OBARENES is a fresh take on the classic profile of Rioja whites: “It innovates with a combination of ageing on lees in new barrels and in an egg-shaped vat as well”, GÓMEZ CRUZADO's oenologist David González points out.

The DOCa Rioja Regulatory Board classified this wine’s 2013 vintage as “good”. However, GÓMEZ CRUZADO considers it an outstanding vintage for white, given the grapes’ exceptional levels of acidity and intense aromatic precursors, which were fostered by the cold weather during that vintage that ended with a cool and rainy period.

With just 2,950 bottles, the 2013 vintage of MONTES OBARENES is a limited edition that pays tribute to Rioja’s great historic white wines. This wine is crafted through meticulous work in the winery, including the utmost respect for the fruit’s character and the desire to create a wine that stands the test of time.

'White Wine Discovery of the Year' in the DOCa. Rioja

British Master of Wine and wine writer Tim Atkin published his first report dedicated exclusively to Rioja’s DOCa last year and highlighted MONTES OBARENES as the 'White Wine Discovery of the Year' in the DOCa. Rioja. Atkin described it as “complex, leesy, citrus and white stone fruit, complemented by baking spices, a touch of oak and a long, refreshing finish. A wine to watch”. Atkin also included Juan Antonio Leza and David González, the oenologists at the helm of GÓMEZ CRUZADO's recent innovations, as members of the new generation of talented wine-makers who "are changing the face of the region".

In addition to MONTES OBARENES, GÓMEZ CRUZADO's TERROIR SELECTION includes two limited edition reds: CERRO LAS CUEVAS, an expression of small old bush-trained vines grown in white ferrous clay soil in Leza (located in Rioja Alavesa), at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria; and PANCRUDO, a reflection of an 80-year-old vineyard rooted in red ferrous clay soil in Baradán, near the Sierra de la Demanda. With its collection of village wines, TERROIR SELECTION, GÓMEZ CRUZADO aims to create wines that are strongly tied to their terroir, and rooted in the land and local know-how of these privileged areas of Rioja.
