Sarah Jane Evans MW highlights Gómez Cruzado Blanco 2016 among the great white Rioja wines for summer at Decanter magazine

The Decanter's critic welcomes the striking turnaround of the Rioja whites

06 of August of 2018

The Master of Wine and Spanish wine expert Sarah Jane Evans highlights GÓMEZ CRUZADO BLANCO 2016 among the great white Rioja wines to enjoy this summer in an article published at DECANTER. The award-winning wine writer and journalist describes GÓMEZ CRUZADO BLANCO 2016 as a “great-value” wine that shows “the producer’s keynote freshness”, in a winery -says- “now being revived” under new management.

GÓMEZ CRUZADO BLANCO portrays a traditional Riojan fine white wine. A blend of local Viura variety instills the wine with finesse, elegance and excellent ageing capacity, while white Tempranillo adds freshness, acidity and fruitiness. This wine is aged on lees in wood and concrete which provide rich nuances of aroma and taste and a delicate and complex nature.

“White Rioja’s transformation has been nothing short of remarkable”, underlines Sarah Jane Evans MW. The DECANTER’S critic welcomes “the striking turnaround” of the whites of the Rioja wine region. “Viura today needs planting in cooler sites, harvesting earlier, perhaps also blending with other varieties -all the usual practices to enhance freshness and fight the drabness”, explains. She also defends new approaches in the barrel-fermented and/or barrel-aged wines to achieve fine subtlety and textura without being dominated by the oak.
