BARRIO DE LA ESTACIÓN

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HISTORY OF EL BARRIO

The wine trade between Rioja and France, through the line Tudela-Bilbao whose railway -passing through Haro- was inaugurated in 1863, generated the birth of the Barrio de la Estación in the late nineteenth century, with the wineries located around train railways, where fine wines were produced, bottled and aged following the French manner. But wine has not traveled only between rails over the centuries; by land, sea and air Rioja wine has been distributed to the five continents. The anthropologist Luis Vicente Elías summaries the history of the transport of wine since antiquity.
