Gómez Cruzado presents new vintages of its fine and village wine collections at Alimentaria Fair

The Gómez Cruzado winery, located in Barrio de la Estación in Haro, will present its revitalized collection of wines at the Intervin Hall in the Alimentaria Fair, 25 – 28 April in Barcelona

Haro, 23 April 2016. – The GÓMEZ CRUZADO winery will participate in the Alimentaria Fair held April 25th to April 28th in Barcelona. This winery from Barrio de la Estación in Haro will introduce the latest vintages of its fine wines and limited edition collection of village wines that reflect the most recent work of this century-old Riojan winery, led by two young grapegrowers and winemakers: David González and Juan Antonio Leza.

GÓMEZ CRUZADO will have its own stand in the INTERVIN HALL at ALIMENTARIA in the Rioja Wines area (E575), which is managed by the Riojan regional government and the Riojan Federation of Entrepeneurs (FER). Alimentaria 2016, in its 40th year anniversary, will host 4,000 companies from 70 countries, and expects to receive more than 140,000 visitors, 35% from outside Spain.

Annual production at GÓMEZ CRUZADO does not exceed 250,000 bottles, making it the boutique winery of Barrio de la Estación, and the smallest in this community. The wine-making process at this winery is guided by the utmost respect for the fruit and a meticulous attention to detail throughout each step. The heart of this project lies in the vineyard: small old vines grown is the most representative areas of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, where great wines rooted in their terroir can be created.

David González and Juan Antonio Leza have personally shaped GÓMEZ CRUZADO's wines starting in 2008 as consultants, and leading the project since 2013. They will both accompany these wines to the fair in Barcelona.

The winery offers a primary wine collection - the GÓMEZ CRUZADO FAMILY - which remains faithful to their heritage of the fine wine style of Barrio de la Estación in Haro, and is defined by its origin and typicity of cold Rioja and exudes balance, elegance, rich nuances and silkiness. This group of wines is created by classic Rioja wine-making in terms of ageing periods, traditional procedures, and extended periods of refining at the winery. The result is six fine wines that reinterpret the classics: GÓMEZ CRUZADO Blanco, Vendimia Seleccionada, Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva and Honorable.

At the same time GÓMEZ CRUZADO is exploring the diversity that Rioja can offer through their collection of village wines called TERROIR SELECTION, which is a limited edition born from the winemakers desire to convey the expressions of very specific plots of land, and the truly unique characteristics that distinguish these plots from the rest, in a designation of origin as richly nuanced and diverse as Rioja. These vineyards are located in especially notable regions, with beautiful viticulture landscapes with extraordinary potential. This collection of wines is faithful to its terroir, rooted in the landscape and the local know-how of these privileged regions: tiny “sub”-Riojas that must be captured and shared. Three wines: Pancrudo, Cerro Las Cuevas and Montes Obarenes – to be released on the market this spring – from three villages: Bandarán, Leza and Haro. 

A young and talented generation changes Rioja

David González and Juan Antonio Leza’s role at the head of GÓMEZ CRUZADO's most recent work has caught the attention and recognition of international wine critics. British Master of Wine and wine writer Tim Atkin published his first case study of Rioja D.O.Ca. last December and noted that González and Leza both form part of the younger generation of winemakers and oenologists that “are changing the face of the region”. Atkins goes on to include the wines of this century-old winery in Barrio de la Estación among the best of Rioja D.O.Ca., citing Montes Obarenes as the “stand-out white wine from this designation of origin”.
