Gómez Cruzado winemaker David González and La Vieja Bodega sommelier Sergio Mujico, finalists at the Wine & Win competition at San Sebastián Gastronomika

With nearby winery and restaurant in Rioja Alta, it is the first time that they competed together in a tasting in pairs

Haro, 11 October 2017. - GÓMEZ CRUZADO winemaker, David González, and sommelier of LA VIEJA BODEGA, Sergio Mujico, made it to the final round of the fifth edition of WINE&WIN, a wine tasting challenge for teams of two, featured at SAN SEBASTIÁN GASTRONOMIKA. This competition describes itself as “a challenge inspired by TV game shows that puts participants’ theoretical and practical knowledge to the test".

In the semifinal, teams of two completed thirty multiple-choice questions covering topics from the national and international wine world in fields such as oenology, viticulture, and the history, culture, and geography of wine, as well as a blind wine tasting of two wines. The final stage of WINE&WIN consisted of 15 rapid fire questions, in addition to a blind tasting of three wines. The stage set-up at the Kursaal auditorium was styled after a TV game show with finalists competing on stage alongside the host, sommelier Ferran Centelles, and included a large screen as a backdrop.

WINE&WIN is open to professionals and amateurs alike, but always in teams of two. It was David González and Sergio Mujico’s first time participating in this competition. González and Mujico work at winery and restaurant respectively, in the neighboring towns of Haro and Casalarreina in Rioja Alta.

The Rioja Alta team made it to the final round against the winners Xavier Calzada and Jon Andoni Rementería, sommelier of the Basque restaurant Remenetxe. The other team in the final round was Javi Pérez and Eduardo Camiña, both sommeliers at the renowned restaurant Mugaritz.

David González has been working as a winemaker in different wine regions for almost twenty years. He is currently leading the revitalization of the GÓMEZ CRUZADO winery at the heart of Barrio Estación in Haro alongside his partner Juan Antonio Leza. Sergio Mujico graduated from the Escuela Superior de Hostelería de Bilbao and is currently the sommelier at the restaurant LA VIEJA BODEGA located in Rioja Alta. LA VIEJA BODEGA has been named a Bid Gourmand by the Michelin Guide that recognizes “exceptionally good food at moderate prices” and occupies the sixth place among the best restaurants in Spain, according to Travelers' Choice Awards, the most important awards granted by Tripadvisor.
